Paper Bag Rhythm Paintings.
Acrylic on flattened paper bag.
2002–2006.
These pieces were started because I moved to New York in 2002 at the precise moment recycling in that city was suspended. I was interested in the rhythms of the city, and the stories told by the textures of its surfaces. Applying paint to the accumulating paper bags (and other recyclables in my apartment) was a way to distill those voices, and to continue working out the landscape rhythms I had been working on in Michigan.
